We’re excited to announce that starting May 20th 2011 Yellow barn Day Care in Aptos will be expanding our schedule AS WELL as our facility.

We’ve hired help and enlarged our rooms and play yard to accommodate up to 14 children.

A trip to the personal trainer…

So, a few of the children that I have cared for have parents in the fitness arena her in Santa Cruz, and of course the children are quite familiar with exercise and some of the lingo. One day Seamus and I were playing with those tiny tennis balls. I put one in each sleeve of his (where his biceps are) And told him that I was his personal trainer, and those were his muscles. One of his pals was about to arrive, so I suggested that he show her his big muscles when she got here. A few minutes, and a little wiggling, later and I hear him shout out, ” Oh no! There’s a muscle in my armpit!” What a cutie. He says some really cute things. I’m sure you haven’t heard the last of Seamus Hippopotamus’ words of wisdom here at Aptos Yellow Barn Daycare.

So this Summer was quite the season for change. It turns out that six of my regular Daycare children moved on to start pre-school. I have been missing them and hope to see you kids again around Santa Cruz, or as drop-ins. And now, I have a few new cuties, a bit of a younger crowd, to spend my days with. We are all getting to know and love each other nicely. I’m sure as you tune in, you will see some cute stories and pics of this fabulous crowd.

Daycare food reimbursement program

Dear Parents,

As you all know we participate in a food reimbursement program, which reimburses food monies to childcare facilities. It is just great. You don’t have to bring food, I get to feed all the children the same thing, and the State makes sure all the food is balanced and up to par, because I follow their guidelines. Then they send me a check monthly. Every July 1st through the 20th, we do re-enrollment forms. I will need a signature and any needed updates, next time I see you. I will try to track you down for that if I wouldn’t be seeing you before the 20th. Thanks so much for your cooperation. Every little bit helps (Grocery $$).

So, since Kim first started as my assistant, she has been turning on some nice classical music as background music for lunch. It is lovely. She says it is to soothe the savage beast. I’m not sure if she means me, or the children, but dosing it works for all of us. Anyway, the kids ask about it, and learn to recognize it, and it’s great! So time passes, and a new day arrives, another lunchtime, and Natalie asks if this is “tricycle” music. So sweet! We tell her it’s classical, she repeats it, then another day she asks, and this time it sounds an awful lot like popsicle music. Quite fun! Everybody loves Natalie.

Animal names and middle names at Aptos Daycare

Welcome again to Aptos Yellow Barn, the home of Yellow Barn Daycare. We all have our jungle names here. It all started when were outside playing in the bushes. Anywhere off the grass we call “the Jungle”. I might shout out, “Liana, come back on the grass, you do not have your jungle shoes on today!” So we all started to have our name that includes an animal. It could rhyme, start with the same letter, or just sound really cool together. For example, I am Paula Koala, but at the beginning of all this, I considered being Paula Bear (like a polar bear). I thought the kids might relate better to the rhyme, though, so now I am Paula Koala. Kim is Kimmy Kitty Cat, we have Natalie Bumblebee, Seamus (pronounced Shamus) Hippopotamus, Liana Llama, Jenai Jaguar, and the list goes on. The children really take it on as their real name. They will call each other by their “full” name, introduce themselves to a new friend with their animal name, and when asked what their middle name is, they reply with the animal middle name, and a tone like “duh” (without saying “duh”), as if it should be obvious information. Some even go to their home “jungle” and name the rest of their family. That’s what happened to Natalie Bumblebee.

Cute story about Aviana and her animal name. She kind of has two. She started as Aviana Aardvark, but when another girl left our childcare facility, she wanted to switch to Aviana Iguana. So sometimes she goes back and forth. Her mom told me that Aviana had been introducing herself to others, and including her animal middle name, ” I’m Aviana Aardvark.” After a while, Mom would correct her, “No honey, your middle name is Marley.” Then Aviana, when asked her middle name, would reply, “I’m Aviana Bob Marley.” So Cute!!

Reminds me when my daughter was little, she wanted her middle name to be “Al”, so we made her a phony drivers license with the name: Monique Al Pailliotet. Neither of our kids have middle names. We always said that they could someday choose their own. She was just trying on the name Al to see how it worked. She grew out of that at about age 4. Ttyl. (“Talk to you later” in text-speak)
